Most organisations in the UAE know their firewall needs replacing well before they replace it. The obstacle is rarely awareness. It is a large, one-off capital purchase that has to compete with every other budget line.
This week Check Point announced a different way to buy. Its new Firewall-as-a-Subscription programme replaces the upfront hardware purchase with a fixed monthly or annual fee. Hardware, threat prevention, management, support and updates come together in one subscription.
For IT leaders weighing a refresh, and for the partners who advise them, this changes how the decision is made. Below we look at what the programme includes, why it matters in the UAE and GCC, and how to decide whether subscribing or buying outright suits your organisation.
What the subscription includes
The programme bundles hardware, software and services into one three-year agreement, priced by the throughput you need.
| Component | What you get |
|---|---|
| Hardware | Check Point Force Firewalls sized to your required throughput, which you can raise at any time during the term |
| AI Network Firewall | Inspection of AI traffic, protection for AI applications and control of AI agents at network level (introduced with R82.20 in July) |
| Threat prevention | AI-driven prevention, including SandBlast |
| Updates | Live Updates that apply security patches without restarts or downtime |
| Management | Cloud-based Smart-1 Agentic Management, with no extra on-premises infrastructure |
| Support | 24/7 premium support |
| Services | Global Services Flex Credits, usable for migrating management from another vendor's firewall or for other Check Point services |
| Refresh | The option to move to new hardware after 36 months |
Check Point has not yet published regional availability or a general availability date, so UAE organisations should confirm terms locally before planning around it.
Why it matters in the UAE and GCC
The region's threat level keeps rising, but security budgets do not always keep pace. A subscription model addresses that gap in four ways.
- It lowers the barrier for SMEs. Growing businesses can deploy enterprise-grade protection without finding a large capital sum in one go.
- It makes costs predictable. A fixed fee is easier to plan around than a hardware purchase followed by renewals, support contracts and unplanned upgrades.
- It builds in the refresh. Many firewalls in the region were installed four or five years ago and are nearing end of life. A subscription with a hardware refresh after 36 months stops the next upgrade becoming another budget battle.
- It keeps protection current. Bundled updates and AI-focused inspection matter as more organisations adopt AI tools and as regulators across the GCC raise their expectations.
The model will not suit everyone. Government entities, critical infrastructure operators and organisations with strict procurement rules may still prefer to own their equipment outright. The point is that there is now a real choice.
Buy or subscribe? Questions to ask
Before choosing, IT and finance teams should work through these questions together.
- How does your organisation treat IT spend? Some prefer operating costs; others have capital budgets set aside or procurement rules that require ownership.
- What is the total cost over three to five years? Compare the subscription with outright purchase plus support, licences, upgrades and the eventual replacement.
- How fast is your throughput need growing? If traffic is rising with cloud and AI adoption, the ability to scale mid-term has real value.
- Do you have in-house security skills? Bundled management and 24/7 support matter more for lean IT teams.
- Are you migrating from another vendor? Migration credits can reduce the cost and risk of switching.
- What happens at the end of the term? Check renewal pricing, data and configuration portability, and your exit options.
What it means for the channel
Subscription security changes the job of distributors and resellers. The conversation moves from a one-off box sale to a multi-year relationship. Partners need to model total cost of ownership, manage renewals and stay involved in the customer's environment for the full term.
At COMMPRO Technologies, we work with partners and end customers across the UAE and GCC on networking and security decisions like this one. Whether the right answer is to buy outright, subscribe, or combine both, we can help you compare the options and plan the transition.
